Patricia C Sympson Ph D: East Rockaway

East Rockaway

Description

East Rockaway is a village on the south shore of Nassau County, Long Island. In 1689, Joseph Haviland built a gristmill, which became the center of economic, social, and cultural life for the next century and a half, until the arrival of the railroad changed the focus of East Rockaway. Shipping waned, milling became obsolete, and new families arrived as East Rockaway entered the 20th century. A picturesque community, the village was incorporated in an effort by the village fathers to fight against unnecessary taxation. Today East Rockaway is a suburban community, with many of its residents employed locally, and it embraces its portrayal as a somnolent, quiet village.

The complete How to...for making the most of using digital technology in your classroom * Practical advice on how to use the Internet, email, podcasts, interactive whiteboards etc. including how to structure lessons and assess learning * Tutorial CD-ROM with guided examples and step-by-step instructions on blogs, Webquest creation, Skype and more * Advice on how to keep up to date with new technologies This delightful and richly informative book amply proves that chemistry can appeal to our intuition, logic, and--if we're willing to get down and dirty--our sense of enjoyment too. Published in conjunction with the first large-scale retrospective of Picasso's sculpture in the US since The Museum of Modern Art's historic show of 1967, "Picasso Sculpture" is a sweeping survey of the artist's profoundly innovative and influential East Rockaway pdf work in three dimensions.Over the course of his long career, Picasso devoted himself to sculpture wholeheartedly, if episodically, using both traditional and unconventional materials and techniques. Unlike painting, in which he was formally trained and through which he made his living, sculpture occupied a uniquely personal and experimental status in Picasso's oeuvre. He kept the majority of his sculptures in his private possession during his lifetime, and it was only in the late 1960s that the public became fully aware of this side of his oeuvre. "Picasso Sculpture" presents approximately 150 sculptures--many of them captured in newly commissioned and sometimes multi-view photographs--alongside a selection of works on paper and photographs. Organized into chapters that correspond to distinct periods during which Picasso devoted himself to sculpture, the publication features an introduction by the exhibition curators as well as a richly illustrated documentary chronology focusing on the sculptures included in the exhibition. A comprehensive bibliography and list of historic exhibitions related to Picasso's work in sculpture closes the volume, advancing the understanding of Picasso's practice and lifelong commitment to constant reinvention.

Wallace D Wattles: The Science of Getting Rich

The Science of Getting Rich

Description

THIS book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterword. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached.

In this highly anticipated fifteenth novel in the Immortals After Dark series, #1" New York Times "bestselling author Kresley Cole spins a sultry tale of a mighty warrior scarred inside and out and the beguiling sorceress with the power to heal him or vanquish him forever. The ghosts of Yasogami Lake are none other than those who lived there twenty-one years ago, their beings saved The Science of Getting Rich ebook pdf inside Dimension W by a powerful "Numbers" Coil! A young Shijuurou Sakaki and the victims of a dam flooding have been interfering with the present from their small slice of eternity. Shijuurou's sister, Marisa Sakaki, holds the key to everything, but a group of criminal Collectors after her secrets throws Hotel Yasogami into chaos. Kyouma and Mira each make their own way to the truth. What dark tragedy has the Numbers Coil kept out of the light for twenty-one long years?

Bret Easton Ellis: Lunar Park

Lunar Park

Description

Bret Ellis, the narrator of "Lunar Park, "is a writer whose first novel "Less Than Zero" catapulted him to international stardom while he was still in college. In the years that followed he found himself adrift in a world of wealth, drugs, and fame, as well as dealing with the unexpected death of his abusive father. After a decade of decadence a chance for salvation arrives; the chance to reconnect with an actress he was once involved with, and their son. But almost immediately his new life is threatened by a freak sequence of events and a bizarre series of murders that all seem to connect to Ellis s past. His attempts to save his new world from his own demons makes "Lunar Park" Ellis s most suspenseful novel. In this chilling tale reality, memoir, and fantasy combine to create not only a fascinating version of this most controversial writer but also a deeply moving novel about love and loss, parents and children, and ultimately forgiveness."

She has been profiled in "The New York Times" and "The New Yorker," and has been on the cover of "Pop," "L'Officiel," "Zeit""Magazin," and "Bust." Museums and the Shaping of Knowledge

Description

Museums have been active in shaping knowledge over the last six hundred years. Yet what is their function within today's society? At the present time, when funding is becoming increasingly scarce, difficult questions are being asked about the justification of museums. Through the examination of case studies, Eilean Hooper-Greenhill reveals a variety of different roles for museums in the production and shaping of knowledge. Today, museums are once again organising their spaces and collections to present themselves as environments for experimental and self-directed learning.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe

Description

With only TAMMY - a slightly tearful computer with self-esteem issues - a software boss called Phil - Microsoft Middle Manager 3.0 - and an imaginary dog called Ed for company, fixing time machines is a lonely business and Charles Yu is stuck in a rut. He's spent the better part of a decade navel-gazing, spying on 39 different versions of himself in alternate universes (and discovered that 35 of them are total jerks). And he's kind of fallen in love with TAMMY, which is bad because she doesn't have a module for that. With all that's on his mind, perhaps it's no surprise that when he meets his future self, he shoots him in the stomach. And that's a beginner's mistake for a time machine repairman. Now he's stuck in a time loop, going in circles forever. All he has, wrapped in brown paper, is the book his future self was trying to press into his hands. It's called How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. And he's the author. And somewhere inside it is the information that could save him.

A dark and witty work of hardboiled detective fiction set in the mean streets of New York, Chester Himes's A Rage in Harlem includes an introduction by Luc Sante in Penguin Modern Classics. Jackson's woman has found him a foolproof way to make money - a technique for turning ten dollar bills into hundreds. But when the scheme somehow fails, Jackson is left broke, wanted by the police and desperately racing to get back both his money and his loving Imabelle. The first of Chester Himes's novels to feature the hardboiled Harlem detectives 'Coffin' Ed Johnson and 'Grave Digger' Jones, A Rage in Harlem has swagger, brutal humour, lurid violence, a hearse loaded with gold and a conman dressed as a Sister of Mercy. Chester Himes (1909-1984) was born in Jefferson City, Missouri and grew up in Cleveland. Aged 19 he was arrested for armed robbery and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in jail. In jail he "David Copperfield" free ebook began to write short stories, some of which were published in Esquire. Upon release he took a variety of jobs from working in a California shipyard to journalism to script-writing while continuing to write fiction.

The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry: From Ancient to Contemporary, the Full 3000-Year Tradition

Description

Unmatched in scope and literary quality, The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry" "spans three thousand years, bringing together more than six hundred poems by more than one hundred thirty poets, in translations many new and exclusive to the book by an array of distinguished translators. Here is the grand sweep of Chinese poetry, from the Book of Songs ancient folk songs said to have been collected by Confucius himself and Laozi s Dao De Jing" "to the vividly pictorial verse of Wang Wei, the romanticism of Li Po, the technical brilliance of Tu Fu, and all the way up to the twentieth-century poetry of Mao Zedong and the post Cultural Revolution verse of the Misty poets. Encompassing the spiritual, philosophical, political, mystical, and erotic strains that have emerged over millennia, this broadly representative selection also includes a preface on the art of translation, a general introduction to Chinese poetic form, biographical headnotes for each of the poets, and concise essays on the dynasties that structure the book. A landmark anthology, The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry" "captures with impressive range and depth the essence of China s illustrious poetic tradition."

With his unique blend of original research, sharp wit, and hilarious anecdotes, Perrottet brings us a romping travel adventure through the scandalous backrooms of historical Europe. Although we all want to help the environment, our knowledge of what are 'green' choices is often so limited that we can do more harm than good. But now a new phenomenon, The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry: From Ancient to Contemporary, the Full 3000-Year Tradition download ebook 'radical transparency', the availability of complete information about all aspects of a product's history, is about to transform the power of consumers and the fate of business. Ecological Intelligence shows you: - Why a t-shirt that claims it is '100% organic cotton' may be in fact no such thing - Why it's good to buy tulips from Kenya and wine from France - That even the type of shampoo you use could affect the future of the planet Knowledge is power. By discovering how to tune your eco intelligence, Daniel Goleman shows, you can make better decisions, and a better world.

Tonio Andrade: The Gunpowder Age: China, Military Innovation, and the Rise of the West in World History

The Gunpowder Age: China, Military Innovation, and the Rise of the West in World History

Description

The Chinese invented gunpowder and began exploring its military uses as early as the 900s, four centuries before the technology passed to the West. But by the early 1800s, China had fallen so far behind the West in gunpowder warfare that it was easily defeated by Britain in the Opium War of 1839-42. What happened? In The Gunpowder Age, Tonio Andrade offers a compelling new answer, opening a fresh perspective on a key question of world history: why did the countries of western Europe surge to global importance starting in the 1500s while China slipped behind? Historians have long argued that gunpowder weapons helped Europeans establish global hegemony. Yet the inhabitants of what is today China not only invented guns and bombs but also, as Andrade shows, continued to innovate in gunpowder technology through the early 1700s--much longer than previously thought. Why, then, did China become so vulnerable? Andrade argues that one significant reason is that it was out of practice fighting wars, having enjoyed nearly a century of relative peace, since 1760. Indeed, he demonstrates that China--like Europe--was a powerful military innovator, particularly during times of great warfare, such as the violent century starting after the Opium War, when the Chinese once again quickly modernized their forces. Today, China is simply returning to its old position as one of the world's great military powers. By showing that China's military dynamism was deeper, longer lasting, and more quickly recovered than previously understood, The Gunpowder Age challenges long-standing explanations of the so-called Great Divergence between the West and Asia.

We are consuming resources and polluting our environment at a rate that is outstripping our planet's ability to support us. To create a sustainable future, we must not only change our own actions, we must educate and encourage those around us to change theirs. If one individual recycles his plastic containers, the impact is minimal. But if The Gunpowder Age: China, Military Innovation, and the Rise of the West in World History free pdf an entire community recycles, enormous amounts of resources are saved. How then do we go about transforming people's good intentions into action? This book explains how the field of community-based social marketing has emerged as an effective tool for encouraging positive social change. This completely revised and updated third edition contains a wealth of new research, behaviour change tools, and case studies. Learn how to: target unsustainable behaviours, and identify the barriers to change; understand various commitment strategies; communicate effective messages; and, enhance motivation and invite participation.

Growing Up Absurd: Problems of Youth in the Organized Society

Description

Paul Goodman's "Growing Up Absurd" was a runaway best seller when it was first published in 1960, and it became one of the defining texts of the New Left. Goodman was a writer and thinker who broke every mold and did it brilliantly--he was a novelist, poet, and a social theorist, among a host of other things--and the book's surprise success established him as one of America's most unusual and trenchant critics, combining vast learning, an astute mind, utopian sympathies, and a wonderfully hands-on way with words. For Goodman, the unhappiness of young people was a concentrated form of the unhappiness of American society as a whole, run by corporations that provide employment (if and when they do) but not the kind of meaningful work that engages body and soul. Goodman saw the young as the first casualties of a humanly re-pressive social and economic system and, as such, the front line of potential resistance. Noam Chomsky has said, "Paul Goodman's impact is all about us," and certainly it can be felt in the powerful localism of today's renascent left. A classic of anarchist thought, "Growing Up Absurd" not only offers a penetrating indictment of the human costs of corporate capitalism but points the way forward. It is a tale of yesterday's youth that speaks directly to our common future.

The Weather Wizard's Cloud Book offers a foolproof three-step system for predicting the weather. With amazing accuracy, this simple system can account for swiftly changing local weather developments more effectively than weather Growing Up Absurd: Problems of Youth in the Organized Society pdf maps or official area forecasts, which are issued well in advance of weather conditions. Includes more than 120 full-color photographs. Today's researchers have access to more information than ever before. Yet the new material is both overwhelming in quantity and variable in quality. How can scholars survive these twin problems and produce groundbreaking research using the physical and electronic resources available in the modern university research library? In Digital Paper, Andrew Abbott provides some much-needed answers to that question. Abbott tells what every senior researcher knows: that the research process in such materials is not a mechanical, linear process, but a thoughtful and adventurous journey through a non-linear world. He breaks library research down into seven basic and simultaneous tasks: design, search, scanning/browsing, reading, analyzing, filing, and writing. He moves the reader through the phases of research, from confusion to organization, from vague idea to polished result. He teaches how to evaluate data and prior research; how to follow a trail to elusive treasures; how to organize a project; when to start over; when to ask for help.

Prototyping for Architects: Real Buildings for the Next Generation of Digital Designers

Description

Prototyping is an essential part of the designer's repertoire. Designers prototype their projects to test them, structurally, aesthetically, technically. Whether the prototype works or not is not the point: prototyping is the revelatory process through which the designer gains insight. There are three reasons why contemporary prototyping techniques are transforming the way architects design and build: at a miniature scale, prototyping aids the architect in the presentation to clients of complex spatial ideas; prototyping empowers the architect-designer to test and prove a building's feasibility, leading to more open-minded construction solutions; and whether additive (3D printing) or subtractive (robotic milling), prototyping can lead to unexpected and exciting new possibilities within design as a whole, across design disciplines, thus blurring the boundaries between them in highly creative ways. The book has four sections: an introduction that charts the rise of prototyping in design history, more specifically in architecture; an overview of techniques; a survey section featuring 30 projects, each presented through texts drawn from first-hand interviews, on-site photographs and drawings; and a reference section, which includes a glossary of technical terms.

This Dragonlance omnibus contains the complete text for "Dragons of a Fallen Sun," "Dragons of a Lost Star," and "Dragons of a Vanished Moon." Capital, as Marx once wrote, comes into the world dripping from head to foot, from every pore, with blood and dirt. He might well have been describing the long, grim history of rubber. From the early stages of primitive accumulation to the heights of the industrial revolution and beyond, rubber is one of Prototyping for Architects: Real Buildings for the Next Generation of Digital Designers download ebook pdf a handful of commodities that has played a crucial role in shaping the modern world, and yet, as John Tully shows in this remarkable book, laboring people around the globe have every reason to regard it as the devil s milk. All the advancements made possible by rubber industrial machinery, telegraph technology, medical equipment, countless consumer goods have occurred against a backdrop of seemingly endless exploitation, conquest, slavery, and war. But Tully is quick to remind us that the vast terrain of rubber production has always been a site of struggle, and that the oppressed who toil closest to the devil s milk in all its forms have never accepted their immiseration without a fight.
